Four Key Members of Notorious Kumasi Carjacking Syndicate Arrested After Fatal Robbery of Mr. Andrews Amankwah

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested four key members of a violent carjacking syndicate following the robbery and murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwah at Ohwim-Amanfrom, Kumasi, on February 10, 2026.

In a press release issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo detailed that the arrests resulted from a coordinated, intelligence-led operation involving the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, and the CID Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.

The suspects arrested between February 18 and 22, 2026, are:

Akwasi Manu (47) – arrested for unlawful possession of the deceased’s Samsung mobile phone, which became a breakthrough lead in the investigation.

Bashiru Tanko alias “TK” (33) – arrested at Atonsu, Kumasi, and linked to prior car-snatching incidents.

Kojo Amponsah alias “Kamakazi” (35) – arrested at Hwireso near Boankra; provided intelligence connecting the group to multiple violent robberies.

Emmanuel Kwame Appiah alias “Taller” (38) – arrested at Danyame, Kumasi; identified as the driver during the fatal robbery.

The alleged leader of the syndicate, Eric Antwi Duku (42), was shot during a police operation on February 22 and later pronounced dead at the hospital from his injuries.

Items recovered during the operations include:

A Bruni Mod 84 pistol with eight rounds of live ammunition

A tracking device

Forged vehicle documents

A Toyota Corolla S

According to police, the syndicate specialised in targeting Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles after conducting surveillance on victims. In recent months, the group had escalated to using lethal force during robberies.

All four arrested suspects remain in police custody and are expected to face court proceedings soon. The recovered firearm is undergoing forensic and ballistic examination, and efforts continue to apprehend additional accomplices.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to dismantling violent criminal networks across the region and encouraged the public to continue providing credible information through official channels.

“We will leave no stone unturned in pursuing criminals,” the statement affirmed. “Your cooperation is vital in ensuring justice is served and communities remain safe.”
