Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Arrives in Latvia to Investigate Death of Ghanaian Student

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit focused on uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic and still unclear death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.
In a Facebook post, the Minister revealed that Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, personally assured him of full cooperation in the pursuit of truth and justice.
The visit fulfils a public promise Mr Ablakwa made to Ghanaians to personally follow up on the case. He is leading a six-member delegation that includes:
Senior directors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
A forensic expert
A pathologist
Two family members of the deceased were initially unable to travel on Saturday night due to delays in visa processing. The Minister confirmed that their visas were issued on Sunday and they are scheduled to depart later that night to join the team on Monday morning.
Addressing social media claims, Mr Ablakwa clarified that all members of the delegation — family and experts alike — are fully funded by the Ministry. He described allegations of extortion or fake ticket issuance as completely unfounded.
The delegation is expected to hold critical meetings on Monday with Latvia’s Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as the investigators handling the case.
The visit aims to provide clear answers about the events leading to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death and to help bring much-needed closure to his grieving family. Updates are expected as the meetings progress.
