Foreign Affairs Ministry Probes Suspicious Death of Ghanaian Student in Latvia

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the Government of Ghana has launched investigations into the death of an 18-year-old Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, who died under suspicious circumstances in Latvia.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Mr Ablakwa described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively engaging relevant diplomatic channels to uncover the truth behind the young student’s death.
“My attention has been drawn to a heart-wrenching video reporting the killing of a Ghanaian student by name Nana Adjei in Latvia,” the Minister stated.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced immediate investigations through relevant diplomatic channels. We shall provide the public with regular updates. It is worth reminding that nobody harms a Ghanaian in any part of the world and gets away with it.”
Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, enrolled in July 2024 and died on June 4, 2025. His death has sparked widespread concern among his family, fellow students, and members of the Ghanaian community abroad.
The student’s remains were returned to Ghana on July 23, 2025, for burial, but unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his death have intensified calls for a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
Latvian authorities have indicated that Nana Agyei died after allegedly falling from the sixth floor of his apartment building. However, his family has strongly disputed this account, rejecting suggestions of suicide or an accidental fall and insisting that foul play was involved.
According to the family, Nana Agyei sent a voice note to relatives three days before his death, claiming that he had been poisoned by two Latvian acquaintances after consuming a drink. They have also raised concerns about inconsistencies in official reports, noting that the body was reportedly found fully clothed with only a scratch on the forehead and no broken bones—details they argue are inconsistent with a fall from a six-storey building.
The family further claims that medical reports confirmed poisoning by an unknown substance, yet the individuals allegedly involved were released by authorities, deepening suspicion and public concern.
As investigations continue, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has pledged to keep Ghanaians informed, while the family and civil society groups continue to demand justice and accountability in the case.
