Firefighter Suffers Serious Injury While Battling Makola Fire

A firefighter has sustained a serious facial injury while battling the fire outbreak at Makola near Accra’s Central Police Station.

Speaking from the scene, ADO1 Alex King Nartey confirmed that the injured firefighter suffered severe injuries to the cheek and was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

He disclosed that firefighters responding to the incident have been exposed to major safety risks due to the continued flow of electricity in parts of the affected area.

According to ADO1 Nartey, the Ghana National Fire Service contacted the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to disconnect power supply to support safe firefighting operations. However, electricity was reportedly still active in sections of the area while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

The situation, he said, resulted in some firefighters suffering electric shocks during the operation, raising serious concerns over the safety of personnel at the scene.

Despite the dangers, firefighting teams remain actively engaged in efforts to bring the inferno under control and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings and businesses.

Four fire engines, including pumps from the Accra City, Ministries, Parliament and Industrial Area fire stations, have been deployed to assist with the operation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, while authorities continue efforts to fully extinguish the flames and assess the extent of damage caused by the incident.
