Finance Minister Ato Forson Slams NPP for ‘Champagne Lifestyle on Akpeteshie Budget’

In an interview with Joy News on July 24, 2025, following the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review presentation in Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson criticized the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for reckless spending that outstripped revenue.

Defending the Mahama administration’s prudent fiscal strategy, he accused the NPP of unsustainable extravagance.

“The NPP spent what they didn’t have. They were living a champagne lifestyle on an akpeteshie budget,” Dr. Forson said, highlighting the inherited legacy of excessive expenditure.

He emphasized that the current government prioritizes financial discipline, stating, “We spend within our means; what we have is what we’re spending, and we’re spending rightly.” He rebuffed pressure to emulate the NPP’s approach, underscoring a commitment to long-term sustainability.
