Fake Soldier Fined GH¢3,600 or Faces 5 Months in Jail for Impersonation at Techiman Recruitment

A 33-year-old man, Maxwell Sackey, has been convicted and fined GH¢3,600 (in default 5 months imprisonment) by the Tuobodom District Court for impersonating a military officer during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.

Presiding Judge His Worship Kwadwo Frempong Manso also ordered Sackey to sign a bond of good behaviour after pleading guilty to charges under Section 134 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Court Facts (Presented by Inspector Ofori Yeboah):

Date & Location: 13 November 2025, 6:00 a.m. at Techiman Urban Astro Turf near Methodist Park.

Accused’s Attire: Army green T-shirt, military camouflage trousers, desert boots, and other military gear.

Modus Operandi: Approached applicants, posed as a soldier, and attempted to extort money to “facilitate” their recruitment.

Suspicious Behaviour: Flagged by real military officers on duty.

Arrest & Confession: Denied being a soldier when questioned; handed to Regional PID and later paraded before Chief Superintendent Albert Fii-Ochil at Techiman Divisional HQ.

Prior Incident (12 Nov): Introduced himself to witness Kwadwo Benjamin Bagbela and demanded cash to help his two brothers — payment refused.

Source of Uniform: Named ex-soldier Osei Richard as supplier of military items.

After a swift investigation, Sackey was charged and arraigned. The court imposed the fine to deter similar fraud during national recruitment drives.

Police have warned the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals at recruitment centres.
