El-Wak Stampede Tragedy: Government Grants Automatic Military Slots to Families of Six Deceased Recruits

In a compassionate response to the heartbreaking stampede at El-Wak Stadium that claimed six lives during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise, the government has announced automatic recruitment slots for qualified family members of the deceased.

President John Dramani Mahama has also directed full state support for funeral arrangements and medical care for the injured, signaling solidarity with grieving families.

The tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, when thousands of eager applicants surged past security barriers at the stadium in a chaotic rush for documentation and body selection. The breach triggered a deadly crush, resulting in six fatalities and multiple injuries. A preliminary GAF inquiry attributed the disaster to applicants disregarding protocols and forcing entry ahead of schedule.

During a condolence visit to one of the bereaved families in Eyan Maim, Central Region, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi conveyed the President’s directive:

“The President has asked us to inform you that all those who wanted to wear the military uniform but died in the process, their families should present a replacement for those people to be absorbed into the military.”

He further revealed that recruitment in Accra has been suspended indefinitely to implement stricter safety measures and prevent future tragedies. Regional authorities will engage affected families to identify eligible relatives for the automatic slots.

Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, who accompanied the delegation, described the loss as a national wound:

“Your children also belong to the State.” She confirmed that the government will cover:

Full funeral and burial costs for all six victims

All medical expenses for injured recruits recovering at 37 Military Ho

The gesture aims to honor the aspirations of the fallen applicants
