ECG Warns Against Illegal Meter Transfers, Threatens Legal Action

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a stern warning to the public against unauthorized transfers of electricity meters, labeling the act as illegal and subject to criminal prosecution.
In a statement released today, ECG emphasized that all meters are registered to specific locations and cannot be moved without formal approval, as such actions disrupt billing systems and service delivery.
Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, clarified that meter transfers are only permitted for movable structures like containers and kiosks within the same ECG district, and must be executed by authorized personnel upon official request. “A meter issued by ECG is registered to a particular location. It cannot be transferred, especially from immovable structures such as residential buildings,” he stated. Transfers involving permanent structures are strictly prohibited.
Dr. Ayiku urged customers to report suspicious meter activities through ECG’s district offices or verified channels, warning that violators face legal consequences. “Transferring a meter without ECG’s consent is a violation of both company policy and national laws,” he stressed. The company reiterated its commitment to ensuring a reliable and safe power supply, calling on customers to comply with regulations to support these efforts.
