EC to Rerun Parliamentary Election in 19 Ablekuma North Polling Stations

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that a rerun of the Parliamentary Election will be held in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency. This decision comes after a dispute arose over the authenticity of election results from the December 7, 2024, General Election.

In a press release dated July 2, and signed by Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, the Commission stated that this resolution was reached following a meeting on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, with representatives from the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The core of the dispute lies in the NDC’s concerns about the use of scanned “Pink Sheets” from 37 polling stations. These Pink Sheets, which are used to record results at each polling station, were reportedly supplied by the NPP and, according to the NDC, lacked sufficient verification. The NDC had initially pushed for a full rerun of the election in all 37 affected stations.

Conversely, the NPP argued that only three outstanding polling station results needed to be officially recorded to finalize the outcome. They maintained that the scanned Pink Sheets had already been verified by NDC agents during the initial process.

The EC clarified that the issue arose because physical copies of the Pink Sheets were destroyed when political party supporters stormed the collation center, leading to the use of scanned versions in the collation process.

After extensive discussions, the EC has decided to rerun the election in 19 of the 37 disputed polling stations. The Commission explained that while the scanned results from these 19 stations were approved by both party agents, they were not verified by the Presiding Officers. However, the remaining 18 scanned results were verified by both party agents and the Presiding Officers, and therefore, these will not be subject to a rerun.

The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The EC has assured the public of its commitment to conducting the process with transparency, fairness, and integrity. The Ghana Police Service has been requested to provide ample security to ensure the election is peaceful and orderly.
