EC Refunds GH¢10,000 Filing Fee to Independent Parliamentary Candidate Ransford Antwi in Sunyani East

Fifteen months after the December 7, 2024, general elections, the Bono Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission (EC) has refunded the GH¢10,000 filing fee paid by Independent Parliamentary Candidate Ransford Antwi for the Sunyani East constituency.

The refund was presented during a short ceremony on Friday, March 2026.

According to EC regulations, nomination fees are refunded to parliamentary candidates who obtain a specified percentage of the total valid votes cast in their constituency. In Sunyani East, the results were as follows:

  • NDC’s Seid Mubarak – 34,453 votes
  • NPP’s Kwasi Ameyew-Cheremeh – 22,306 votes
  • Independent Ransford Antwi8,294 votes
  • Alanyina Sampana Sampson – 222 votes

Mr. Antwi’s performance of approximately 12.7% of the total valid votes qualified him for the refund.

Reacting to the development in an interview, the Chief Executive Officer of the Suncity Group of Companies expressed deep appreciation to the Electoral Commission.

“I received a call from the EC that I had qualified for a refund of my filing fee as an independent parliamentary candidate for Sunyani East, following our good performance in the 2024 General Elections,” he said.

He added that he subsequently arranged for the cheque to be picked up on his behalf and thanked everyone who supported his short six-month campaign.

“In fact, I didn’t expect it, and that took me by surprise,” Mr. Antwi noted.

He further stated that the refund would inspire many young people to actively participate in politics and help deepen Ghana’s democracy.

The Electoral Commission has not issued a broader statement on the refund, but the gesture is seen by many as a positive encouragement for independent candidates and smaller parties in future elections.
