Early Morning Fire Damages Container at Suhum Market – Welders’ Negligence Suspected

A fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at the entrance of the busy Suhum Market, damaging a shipping container before being brought under control by firefighters.

Personnel from the Suhum Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call and deployed a six-member crew to the scene. The team managed to contain the flames within minutes and fully extinguished the fire.

Preliminary investigations point to negligence by welders as the likely cause. Authorities believe hot metal scraps from welding work on the container were left on wooden materials, which then ignited.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the incident, though the affected container sustained partial damage.

Market officials and the Ghana National Fire Service have urged artisans, traders, and welders operating in the area to strictly observe safety protocols, especially when working with fire or hot materials, to prevent similar outbreaks in the future.

The Suhum Market is one of the major commercial hubs in the Eastern Region, and fires remain a recurring concern due to the dense concentration of wooden structures and trading activities.
