Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Calls for Unity After Decisive NPP Flagbearer Victory

Newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to party members to set aside differences and unite behind a shared vision as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Accra shortly after his official declaration as winner on Saturday, Dr Bawumia urged supporters, delegates and all party faithful to come together.

“Let go whatever reservations they have and come together. We need every idea, every voice and every piece of advice to help us preserve and project a proud tradition bequeathed to us by our forebears,” he said.

He reminded members that internal contests and disagreements are normal in Ghanaian politics and that the NPP has always overcome such moments stronger.

“United we stand and divided we fall. Let me remind you, dear party members, that whatever we’ve gone through during the past few months is not new in the politics of Ghana. We have been through this on a number of occasions and on each of them we have shown that we have the resilience and fortitude to overcome and even emerge stronger, and herein lies the opportunity,” he added.

Dr Bawumia won the primary decisively with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast by over 211,000 delegates.

The victory positions him as the NPP’s candidate to lead the party into the next general elections, where he will face the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other contenders.

Party leaders and supporters have echoed the call for unity, reconciliation and collective effort to rebuild and strengthen the NPP ahead of 2028.
