Cyber Security Authority, Police Crack Down on SIMbox and Online Fraud Syndicates

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana, in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Command and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has carried out two major operations targeting cybercriminal networks across the country.

In the first operation, conducted over the weekend at three locations in Sakumono, security agencies dismantled a sophisticated SIMbox operation believed to have been facilitating international call fraud. The raid led to the arrest of three Nigerian nationals and a Ghanaian landlord who allegedly provided premises for the illegal activity.

Authorities say the suspects were actively engaged in operations that posed significant risks to Ghana’s telecommunications and national security infrastructure.

In a separate operation at Vakpo in the Volta Region, a three-member syndicate of Ghanaians involved in impersonation, sextortion, and mobile money (MoMo) fraud was arrested. Investigations revealed that the suspects impersonated the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations to deceive and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

All suspects from both operations have been processed for court and are expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Reacting to the arrests, authorities issued a strong warning to cybercriminals, stressing that while Ghana remains a welcoming country, it will not tolerate criminal activity.

“Ghana is a hospitable nation, but anyone who chooses to engage in cybercrime will be tracked down, arrested, and made to face the full rigours of our legal system,” the statement warned.

The successful operations underscore the government’s renewed commitment to combating cybercrime and safeguarding the country’s digital ecosystem through enhanced inter-agency collaboration.
