Christmas Rush Triggers Stampede at Accra Central Market

Traders at the Accra Central Business District have recounted a stampede that occurred on Monday, December 22, following intense congestion caused by last-minute Christmas shopping.
According to traders who spoke to Adom News, the incident happened as large crowds rushed into the market to purchase food items and other essentials ahead of the festive season. The overwhelming human traffic reportedly led to panic, resulting in several people collapsing, including a pregnant woman.
Others affected by the chaos included children who lost their mobile phones and money during the stampede. Traders said the situation nearly turned tragic before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service intervened. Fire officers sprayed water to calm the crowd and restore order, preventing further injuries.
The Accra Central Market, one of the busiest trading hubs in the capital, typically experiences extreme congestion during Christmas, as thousands of shoppers converge daily in preparation for the festivities.
The incident has renewed calls for improved crowd control, security, and safety measures at major markets during peak festive periods.
