Chelsea produced a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge and book their place in the fourth round of the League Cup.
The Blues appeared to be heading for a shock third-round exit after goals from Tarik Muharemovic and Brenden Aaronson put Leeds two goals ahead.
However, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made four changes at half-time, introducing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James, and the substitutions transformed the contest.
Palmer scored twice to bring Chelsea level before Neto put the hosts ahead. Danny Welbeck then added a fourth before Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Leeds.
Valentin Barco restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion before Welbeck struck again in stoppage time to complete a thrilling victory.
Palmer Sparks Chelsea Revival
Alonso’s decision to send on several of his key players at the interval quickly paid dividends.
Chelsea were handed a lifeline five minutes after the restart when Daniel James was penalised for a challenge on Pep Chavarria, allowing Palmer to convert from the penalty spot.
Just two minutes later, Palmer struck again as his effort eventually found its way past Leeds debutant goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
The comeback was suddenly in full swing.
Neto then curled a superb 20-yard effort beyond Zetterer in the 60th minute to give Chelsea the lead.
Only two minutes later, Welbeck turned sharply before firing a powerful effort past the goalkeeper to make it 4-2.
Leeds Refuse to Give Up
Leeds continued to threaten and reduced the deficit in the 75th minute when Calvert-Lewin calmly finished from Noah Okafor’s pass.
Chelsea restored their two-goal advantage five minutes later after Zetterer failed to deal with Rogers’ cross, allowing Barco to sweep the ball into an empty net.
Welbeck completed the extraordinary goal spree in stoppage time, guiding a cushioned header from Barco’s shot into the net to seal Chelsea’s 6-3 victory.
Alonso’s Attack Shines, Defence Still a Concern
The result came after Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Premier League champions Arsenal on Sunday ended Alonso’s three-game winning start.
Despite the setback, Chelsea’s attacking numbers under the former Bayer Leverkusen boss have been impressive. They have now scored 16 goals in Alonso’s first five matches.
However, they have also conceded 10 goals, highlighting defensive concerns that have continued from last season.
Alonso made nine changes for the Leeds game and was forced to field an experimental midfield, with teenage debutant Reggie Watson partnering Argentine youngster Barco.
The 16-year-old Watson became the fourth-youngest player in Chelsea’s history. He is the son of former Wigan midfielder Ben Watson, who scored the winning goal in the 2013 FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Leeds Take Early Control
Chelsea’s heavily rotated side struggled to settle and fell behind in the 23rd minute.
Harry Wilson’s corner found Muharemovic at the far post, with the Bosnia defender rising highest to power a header beyond goalkeeper Mike Penders for his first Leeds goal.
The visitors doubled their advantage three minutes after half-time.
Ethan Ampadu’s cross was flicked on by Lukas Nmecha, allowing Aaronson to finish emphatically and put Leeds 2-0 ahead.
But Chelsea responded in spectacular fashion to turn the game around and secure their place in the next round.
League Cup Fourth Round Takes Shape
League Cup holders Manchester City and Arsenal will play their third-round matches next week against Norwich City and Ipswich Town respectively.
Liverpool will host Tottenham Hotspur, while Manchester United welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford.
Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Sunderland and Bradford City also advanced to the fourth round on Tuesday.
