Black Queens Coach Björkegren Confident of Title Challenge at 2026 WAFCON

Head coach of Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has expressed strong confidence in his squad’s progress and potential to compete for the title at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Swedish tactician, who succeeded Nora Hauptle last year, spoke about the team’s prospects as Ghana prepares to face Mali, Cameroon, and Cape Verde in Group D.
Björkegren, who previously guided the Black Queens to a third-place finish in the last WAFCON, believes the team has been steadily improving and has what it takes to go all the way.
“We have shown that we keep moving in the right direction the whole time. If we do that, we have the potential to go all the way in the tournament,” he said.
The 2026 WAFCON will serve as a qualifier for the expanded Women’s World Cup, with the four semifinalists securing automatic qualification.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, setting the stage for a competitive tournament where the Black Queens aim to build on their recent continental success and make a strong push for the title.
With preparations intensifying, Coach Björkegren’s optimism reflects growing belief within the camp that Ghana can return to the summit of African women’s football in 2026.
