Big Shake-Up Ahead: GFA Confirms Changes to Black Stars Technical Team Before 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that changes will be made to the Black Stars’ technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Communications Director Henry Asante Twum revealed that the adjustments are set to occur soon, although he refrained from naming the specific individuals who will be affected.

Recent media reports suggest that assistant coaches John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann may be let go as part of the restructuring. This move comes after a series of discussions regarding the team’s performance under the guidance of head coach Otto Addo and his coaching staff.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Asante Twum disclosed that the issue was a focal point of the last Executive Council meeting. “A thorough review of the backroom staff was conducted, and several suggestions were made regarding the assistant coaches’ roles since they joined the team in March 2024,” he explained.

While the exact names of those leaving have not been confirmed, Asante Twum emphasized that the decision to make changes was made after careful consideration of the team’s performance in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars failed to qualify, recording three losses and three draws in six matches, marking the first time the team missed the tournament in two decades.

“The changes will be implemented soon to allow new faces to settle in before the World Cup qualifiers begin in March,” he added, stressing the urgency of the decision.

John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann replaced George Boateng and Didi Dramani as assistant coaches in March 2024. The GFA’s upcoming changes to the technical team are part of a broader strategy to ensure the Black Stars are better prepared for the challenges ahead in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Stay tuned for further updates on the Black Stars’ technical team adjustments as the GFA works to strengthen the squad for the upcoming international fixtures.
