Bawumia Condemns Demolition of La Pleasure Beach, Pledges to Rebuild

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the demolition of La Pleasure Beach, describing it as a wanton act that has destroyed a socially, economically, culturally and internationally significant enclave.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, 3 October 2026, from Kumasi, Dr Bawumia said La Beach had evolved into the most vibrant beach resort in Ghana and served as a major source of livelihood for thousands of people, especially the youth.
He noted that the beach was extremely important to the nation and the people of La, and had become the hub of many international functions and shows.
During the NPP government’s tenure, he said, it was one of the key places that supported the successful Year of Return and related activities that put Ghana on the map.
“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly. It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion,” Dr Bawumia said.
He expressed conviction that La Beach must be made a major tourist and economic enclave and pledged his commitment to the people of La, especially the businesses at the beach, to make that happen.
Dr Bawumia outlined five key commitments:
Rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to each business.
Redesign the space to meet standards and assist the operators to run it.
Secure the space for Labadi Beach Hotel and others and allow them to coexist with smaller businesses that together create the beach ecosystem.
Engage the owners of Laboma Beach, resolve their issues and work with them to establish their business in compliance with the law.
Work on the lagoon and resolve issues related to flooding and the environment.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he stated.

The statement was signed by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in Kumasi on Saturday, 3 October 2026.
