Bawumia Accuses NDC of Targeting NPP Members with Arrests, Calls for Unity in 2028

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential hopeful for the 2028 election, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state power to intimidate and harass NPP members. Speaking at a party event in Asokwa, Ashanti Region, the former Vice President pointed to recent arrests of prominent NPP figures as evidence of politically motivated attacks.

“We are witnessing what is happening after losing power. The NDC is intimidating us, harassing, and abusing us,” Bawumia said, citing the arrests of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) for alleged financial misconduct and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC) for “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.”

Abronye was arrested on September 9, 2025, and remanded in custody until Friday, September 12, after appearing before the Accra Circuit Court. Bawumia also claimed that NDC is targeting NPP supporters, including TikTokers, bloggers, and appointees, to weaken the opposition.

Bawumia urged NPP members to unite ahead of the 2028 elections, stating, “This means we need to unite so that in 2028 we will take back power.” He emphasized that internal cohesion is critical to counter the NDC’s alleged tactics and reclaim government control.

The arrests have heightened tensions between the NDC and NPP, with some NPP leaders, like National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, vowing retaliation.
