Barekese Water Treatment Plant Faces Technical Glitch After Pump Blast – GWL Rolls Out Emergency Fixes

The Barekese Water Treatment Plant, a key supplier for Kumasi and surrounding areas, has been hit by a sudden technical failure, prompting Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to implement emergency measures to mitigate widespread supply disruptions.
In a press release issued on December 12, 2025, GWL’s Ashanti Regional Management revealed that a blast at the high-lift section damaged one of the three operational pumps, causing immediate reductions in water flow and pressure across the distribution network.
Engineers are racing against time to repair the faulty pump, with the technical team redistributing available resources to maximize supply to affected customers. “We are managing the water volume to enhance flow and maintain pressure as much as possible,” the statement noted.
GWL underscored the critical role of uninterrupted water services and pledged swift resolution, while apologizing profusely for the disruptions. “We deeply regret the inconvenience and appreciate the public’s patience during this period,” it added.
Customers facing issues are urged to reach out to Dr. Hanson Mensah-Akuttah, Regional Chief Manager for Ashanti Production, at 024 489 1331 or [email protected] for updates and support.
The incident comes amid ongoing challenges in Ghana’s water infrastructure, highlighting the need for resilient systems to serve the Ashanti Region’s growing population.
