Baba Jamal to Be Sworn In as MP for Ayawaso East on Tuesday After Decisive By-Election Victory

Baba Jamal, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will be officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The ceremony will be administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

Jamal’s swearing-in follows his convincing win in the March 3 by-election, which was called to fill the vacancy created by the untimely death of the constituency’s former MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026.

In the keenly contested poll, Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes, comfortably defeating his nearest challenger, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda received 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu garnered 43 votes and Kanor David obtained 104 votes.

A total of 16,928 valid votes were cast, with 120 ballots rejected, bringing the overall turnout to 17,048 votes.

Expressing his gratitude and sense of responsibility in a Facebook post on March 9, Jamal wrote: “Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency.”

The victory has been widely seen as a significant boost for the NDC in one of Accra’s key urban constituencies. Residents and supporters are optimistic that Jamal’s entry into Parliament will usher in renewed focus on infrastructure, youth employment, education, and community development in Ayawaso East.

With the formal swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, Baba Jamal will take his place on the floor of Parliament and begin representing the interests of his constituents in national legislative business.
