Ashanti REGSEC Investigates Violent Disturbances at Obuasi Senior High Technical School

– The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has launched investigations into violent disturbances at Obuasi Senior High Technical School on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has warned that anyone found culpable after the investigation will face the full rigours of the law.

The Headmaster of Obuasi SHTS, Abdullai Zakari, is currently on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after he was assaulted by students during a protest on campus.

According to reports, the students vandalised school property and items at the headmaster’s bungalow. The protest was reportedly triggered by allegations that the headmaster had buried the body of a baby on the school premises.

Six students have been arrested by the police to assist with investigations into the disturbances.

Addressing the 70th anniversary launch of Kumasi Academy, Dr Amoakohene condemned the incident and said the Regional Security Council had taken over the matter to ensure accountability.

“Just in the course of the week, we heard very terrible news from Obuasi SHTS where, for that matter, a headmaster was assaulted. Let me assure the general public that the state has taken a huge interest in the matter and wherever justice is due, same shall be served in due course,” he stated.

Dr Amoakohene used the opportunity to caution students across second-cycle institutions in the region against taking the law into their own hands.

He noted that while students have the right to raise concerns, the destruction of property and assault cannot be justified under any circumstance.

“Students gathered here, I am urging you: do not assault your teachers, do not vandalise school property even if you are in disagreement. Mob justice is one that our laws frown against.

“You have an SRC. In any event where there is disagreement, suspicion, or whatsoever, as future leaders who have been trained to replace us in the near future, you are encouraged to use the laid-down procedures in seeking justice and seeking redress as far as any issues are concerned,” he cautioned.

He apologised to teachers on behalf of students for acts of indiscipline on school campuses and pledged that authorities and stakeholders would work hand in hand with teachers to address such incidents and prevent a recurrence.

“So we want to say to our teachers that we are sorry. We are now ready to co-exist with you and work hand in hand with you,” the Minister said.

Dr Amoakohene was joined by other government officials who pledged the government’s continued support for infrastructure and academic development at the school.

Kumasi Academy, established in 1957, has over the past seven decades produced thousands of graduates who are serving with distinction in both the public and private sectors across Ghana and beyond.

The school has built a reputation for academic excellence, discipline and leadership, and continues to be one of the leading second-cycle institutions in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Nkwantakese, Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, who is also an old student of the school, charged the current students to live up to that legacy.

He reminded them that Kumasi Academy’s name was built on hard work, respect and order.

“This school has trained many people who are currently working in various sectors. I am urging students that we will not accept any acts of violence or disturbances here.

“I have told them that protest should be the last resort in any disagreement with teachers. School property must not be destroyed. My advice to all students across Ghana is to stay away from such acts,” the Nkwantakese Chief stated.

He further urged the students to take their academics seriously, respect their teachers and protect school property, noting that the progress of the school depends on the conduct of its students today.

The leadership of the old students’ association pledged to undertake interventions to improve teaching and learning at the school.

The launch brought together members of the Ghana Baptist Convention, old students, teachers, management and students.
