Ashanti Region to See Major Road and Infrastructure Projects Take Off in Q1 2026

Several long-awaited infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region, including key road developments, are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026 as government begins large-scale project execution under the 2026 Budget.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, announced that the period will mark a transition from planning and stabilisation to full construction, with sod-cutting expected for multiple flagship projects across the region.

Among the major road projects set to take off are the Outer Kumasi Ring Road, the Ahodwo–Santasi dualisation project, the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, and the 124-kilometre Agogo–Maame Krobo Road. According to the Regional Minister, these projects are aimed at improving mobility, reducing travel time, enhancing road safety, and stimulating economic activity within the Ashanti Region and beyond.

In a social media post highlighting key points from the State of the Region Address, Dr Amoakohene explained that the first quarter of 2026 will focus on four main actions: cutting sod for new projects, awarding additional contracts, commencing construction on newly awarded projects, and continuing as well as completing ongoing legacy projects.

He added that, beyond the flagship highways, government will also begin selected town road projects in priority urban and peri-urban areas to improve local connectivity.

The Regional Minister further disclosed that sod will be cut for 77 GETFund projects and more than 300 District Assemblies Common Fund projects across all districts in the region. These projects will target infrastructure deficits in education, health, and local development.

Providing context, Dr Amoakohene noted that 2025 was largely used to address stalled and abandoned projects while securing funding for their completion. Ongoing works include Agenda 111 Hospitals, VAMED Hospitals, the Suame Interchange, Sewua and Afari Hospitals, the KNUST Medical Centre, Kejetia Market Phase 2, Krofrom Market, Phase 4 of the Prempeh I International Airport, and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Maternity Block.

He also mentioned emergency interventions such as repairs to the Kaase, Kotokuom and Jacobu bridges, as well as works at the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi, which were undertaken to stabilise critical infrastructure ahead of the new construction phase.

“The first quarter therefore represents the beginning of large-scale, coordinated delivery,” Dr Amoakohene said, stressing government’s commitment to turning plans into action and budgets into projects, and projects into tangible improvements in the lives of residents of the Ashanti Region.
