Ashanti Police Intensify Manhunt for 7 Robbery Suspects After GH¢130,000 Konongo Heist

Security forces in the Ashanti Region have launched a full-scale manhunt for seven armed robbery suspects following a daring daylight heist in Konongo that netted GH¢130,000, leaving the community on edge and demanding urgent police action.
The brazen attack saw the gang lock one victim in a room to prevent resistance before fleeing the scene.
However, their escape was thwarted when a vigilant resident recognized one of the robbers, Amid Tahiru (40), who, in a desperate bid to evade capture, jumped into a nearby river.
Swift Community Response Leads to First Arrest
Local residents quickly mobilized, fishing Tahiru out of the water and handing him over to the police. His arrest provided critical intelligence that led officers to a hideout where a cache of weapons and robbery tools was recovered.
Items Seized:
Wilson pistol loaded with 11 rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition
Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun with 37 rounds
Two black face masks
Grading machine (used in gold processing)
Fake vehicle registration plate
Second Suspect in Custody
A private security guard, Hlordeme George, was also arrested for allegedly aiding the gang. Both Tahiru and George are in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
Ongoing Operation
Police have intensified patrols and set up checkpoints across the region as the search continues for the remaining seven fugitives.
“We are leaving no stone unturned. The recovered weapons confirm this was a highly organized and dangerous criminal network,” a senior police source told journalists.
Community Outcry
Residents have expressed alarm over rising insecurity, with many calling for:
Increased police visibility
Community policing units
Night patrols in high-risk areas
The Konongo robbery is the latest in a string of armed incidents in the Ashanti Region, raising concerns about the proliferation of illegal firearms.
