Antoine Semenyo’s FA Cup Final Winner Writes New Chapter in Wembley History
Antoine Semenyo produced a fairytale moment in the FA Cup final after scoring a sensational winning goal to hand Manchester City FC victory over Chelsea FC at Wembley.
The Ghanaian forward’s clever flicked finish in the 72nd minute proved decisive in an otherwise tense encounter, securing a 16th major trophy for manager Pep Guardiola and his 20th piece of silverware in charge of Manchester City.
Semenyo’s rise has been remarkable. Eight years ago, he was on loan at non-league side Bath City FC, but he has now etched his name into Wembley folklore after completing a £62.5 million move from AFC Bournemouth to Manchester City in January.
“It has happened a couple of times in training – it happened perfectly today,” Semenyo told BBC Sport after the match.
“Everything happened so fast to be honest. It came straight to me and I had to improvise myself as quickly as I could.”
The 26-year-old admitted winning major trophies is still a new experience for him.
“As a kid I have always wanted to be playing for the top teams – it took a long time to get there, but I am grateful,” he added.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson praised the goal, describing it as a moment of pure quality.
“It was just brilliant from Antoine Semenyo. The timing of the run and the finish is incredible,” Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“It was either going to take a mistake or a piece of quality to break the deadlock in this game – and it was a moment of sheer quality.”
