Analyst Challenges Asiedu Nketiah’s Claim on NDC Leadership Reshuffle Impact

The Executive Director of the African Institute of Strategic Studies, Jonathan Asante Otchere, has challenged claims by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah that the National Democratic Congress’ 2024 electoral victory was partly driven by changes to its parliamentary leadership.

Speaking during the NDC’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” in Tamale, Asiedu Nketiah argued that the reshuffle of the party’s Minority leadership ahead of the elections was a strategic move that contributed to the party’s success at the polls.

The leadership changes, announced in January 2023, saw Cassiel Ato Forson replace Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader, while Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah became Deputy Minority Leader. Kwame Governs Agbodza was also appointed Minority Whip.

However, speaking on  The Pulse, Dr Asante Otchere argued that the NDC chairman may be overstating the impact of the reshuffle.

“Changing or doing a reshuffle in parliament was not flagbearership. You cannot in any way suggest that thing led to the massive win of the NDC. I think that one is an overreach,” he stated.

According to the political analyst, the individuals affected by the reshuffle were not the party’s presidential candidate and therefore could not have been the decisive factor behind the NDC’s electoral victory.

Dr Asante Otchere further suggested that Asiedu Nketiah’s comments could indicate possible presidential ambitions within the party’s future political landscape.
