AMA Launches “Ghana@69 Clean-up” Citywide Exercise for Saturday, March 7

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced a major citywide clean-up campaign called “Ghana@69 Clean-up” to mark the spirit of national pride and civic responsibility during Ghana’s 69th Independence anniversary celebrations.

The exercise forms part of the March 2026 edition of National Sanitation Day and is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, starting at 6:00 a.m. and continuing until all planned activities are completed.

In a press release signed by Head of Public Affairs Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA said the clean-up will target key flood-prone and high-traffic hotspots across the city. These include Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District, Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

Activities will focus on desilting and cleaning drains, sweeping streets and alleyways, removing unauthorised posters and banners, and thoroughly cleaning markets, lorry parks and other public spaces. The goal is to improve environmental conditions, reduce flooding risks and enhance the overall cleanliness of the capital.

The Assembly has called on residents, market leaders, transport unions, community groups and institutions to organise parallel sanitation exercises in their own neighbourhoods to support and expand the AMA’s efforts.

To carry out the day’s work, the AMA will deploy Public Health Officers (commonly known as “Sama-Sama”), the Sanitation Taskforce, sweepers and janitors across all sub-metros, equipped with the necessary logistics and tools.

The AMA reminded the public that participation in communal labour is a civic duty. Refusal to comply with sanitation directives or failure to take part in such exercises is an offence under Ghanaian law. Upon conviction, offenders face a fine of up to 100 penalty units, imprisonment for a term of not less than 30 days and not more than six months, or both. Repeat offenders face additional daily penalties.

The Assembly reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to build a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable Accra.

Residents are encouraged to join the exercise voluntarily, bring their own tools if possible, and help keep the city clean not just on March 7 but throughout the year. The AMA promised to continue regular sanitation drives and enforcement to maintain the gains made during the Independence Day clean-up.
