AMA Donates Streetlights to Kantamanto Traders to Improve Security and Trading Conditions

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated streetlights to traders at Kantamanto Market as part of efforts to improve visibility, security and overall trading conditions within the market.

The donation follows earlier discussions between the Assembly and market leaders over concerns about poor lighting, especially during early morning and late evening trading activities.

The items, made up of eight boxes containing two streetlights each, were presented on behalf of the Mayor of Accra by Policy Advisor Paul Oblie Laryea.

Speaking during the presentation, the Deputy Director in charge of the 24-Hour Economy Office at the AMA, Mr. Nii Sakum Korley, said the intervention forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to addressing concerns raised by traders and improving conditions in major commercial centres across the capital.

According to him, the initial batch of 16 streetlights is intended to begin installation works while additional units are expected to be supplied later.

He assured traders that the Assembly remains committed to creating a safer and more convenient business environment and fulfilling promises made to market stakeholders.

Receiving the items on behalf of traders, President of the market, Mr. Opoku Afreh, described the gesture as historic, saying it was the first time the Assembly had directly donated streetlights to the market.

He commended the AMA for responding positively to concerns raised by traders and providing practical support to improve operations within the market.

Mr. Afreh also encouraged traders to cooperate with Assembly officials by paying approved fees and complying with market regulations.

He urged traders to keep payment receipts and channel grievances through market leadership rather than engaging in confrontations with officials.

The intervention is expected to enhance lighting conditions in sections of the market, improve safety for traders and customers, and strengthen collaboration between the Assembly and market operators.
