All 71 Ghanaian Fishermen Rescued Unharmed After Armed Attack at Sea Off Senya Bereku

Deputy Defence Minister Yaw Brogya Gyamfi has confirmed that all 71 Ghanaian fishermen affected by the recent armed robbery at sea near Senya Bereku have been successfully rescued and are unharmed.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, the Minister provided an authoritative update on the incident, which occurred during a night fishing expedition on February 25, 2026, in the waters off the Awutu Senya District.

“None of them was held hostage,” Mr. Gyamfi stated. “The attackers were primarily interested in stealing outboard motors, leaving the fishermen stranded at sea after disabling their canoes.”

The Deputy Minister commended the swift and coordinated response that led to the rescue, particularly praising the local Member of Parliament (Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui), community leaders, and fishermen who provided crucial information and support to the Ghana Navy during the operation.

He further disclosed that surveillance operations remain active, with both the Eastern and Western Naval Commands continuing to pursue the suspects. The Ghana Navy and Marine Police are leading the manhunt, supported by intelligence gathering and regional cooperation.

The attack involved armed men operating from a black boat who reportedly fired warning shots to intimidate the fishermen before seizing valuable equipment, including outboard motors and generator sets. The fishermen were left adrift in seven canoes until the joint rescue effort located and brought them safely to shore.

No injuries or fatalities were reported among the fishermen. Authorities continue to investigate the incident as part of broader efforts to curb the rising threat of sea robbery along Ghana’s coastline.

The Deputy Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods at sea, urging fishermen to report suspicious activities promptly and cooperate fully with security agencies.

The rescue operation has been widely praised by coastal communities, with many expressing relief and gratitude for the timely intervention of the Navy, Marine Police, and local stakeholders. Investigations remain ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen items. Further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.
