Alarming Spread of Dengue Fever in Ghana: 36 Confirmed Cases and Rising
The spread of dengue fever in Ghana is becoming increasingly concerning as it moves from the Eastern to the Central Region.
According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the total number of confirmed cases now stands at 36. An investigation has revealed a rise in malaria-like symptoms in the affected regions, with additional samples from suspected cases being screened at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR).

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, causing severe flu-like symptoms that can lead to serious complications.
Symptoms of dengue fever include:
- Sudden onset of high fever
- Severe headache (mostly in the forehead)
- Body aches, especially in the muscles, bones, and joints
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rash
To prevent contracting the disease, the GHS advises citizens to take the following measures to avoid mosquito bites:
- Wear protective clothing
- Use mosquito repellents
- Ensure water storage containers are tightly covered
- Discard unused water containers
- Properly dispose of receptacles that could collect water, such as empty cocoa pods and coconut shells on farms
- Sleep under treated mosquito bed nets
