Akwatia By-Election Assault: Police Arrest NDC’s Sofo Azorka, Grant Bail

The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested Alhaji Sofo Azorka, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
Azorka was apprehended in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of an ongoing probe into the violent incident at the Akwatia Lorry Station.
In a statement released on Friday, September 12, the police confirmed Azorka’s detention, where he provided a caution statement before being granted bail.
He is required to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. for arraignment
The arrest follows NPP’s petition to the Inspector General of Police on September 3, demanding Azorka’s prosecution for threats and assault, including pushing Osman and brushing his face during a scuffle.712f8f30e9a0 The by-election, triggered by the death of NPP MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, saw heightened tensions between the parties.
