Akufo-Addo Vows to Step Down in 2025, Pledges Peaceful Election Transition

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured senior citizens that he will willingly step down as president on January 7, 2025, after serving two terms. He made this promise while hosting a Founders’ Day event in Accra, where he also danced with guests to traditional Ghanaian music.

Akufo-Addo reflected on his time in office, citing the challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. He expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic recovery and growth, saying the country is “turning the corner” and returning to normalcy.

The president identified his last major challenge as ensuring peaceful and fair elections in December 2024. He committed to maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa and the world.

Akufo-Addo also addressed critics who question his commitment to Founders’ Day, reiterating his support for the consensus reached in 2019 to honor Kwame Nkrumah and preserve the historical significance of August 4th.

Finally, he expressed hope that his successor would receive the same support he has enjoyed, hinting at his preferred candidate without explicitly naming them.
