Akufo-Addo Orders Repeal of Controversial Mining Law, Cracks Down on Illegal Mining
L.I. 2462 Revoked, Military Deployed to Protect Water Bodies and Forest Reserves
In a significant move to combat illegal mining (galamsey), Ghana’s government has agreed to revoke the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2462). President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directed the revocation following a meeting with Organised Labour on October 3, 2024.
Key Highlights:
– Revocation of L.I. 2462 to prevent mining in forest reserves
– Military deployment to demobilize and destroy equipment used by illegal miners
– Collaboration with Organised Labour and stakeholders to combat galamsey
– Swift adjudication of illegal mining cases
– Government commits to protecting water bodies and forest reserves
The decision aims to address the long-standing issue of galamsey, which has plagued Ghana’s environment and water resources. Despite this, Organised Labour has decided to proceed with a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024.
