Accra has been ranked among the 20 best cities in the world for nightlife in 2026, placing 18th globally in a new ranking by Time Out.
The Ghanaian capital earned recognition for its vibrant nightlife districts, growing selection of bars and clubs, live music venues and alternative entertainment spaces.
The ranking was based on responses from more than 24,000 residents, combined with assessments from Time Out city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
Cities were assessed on factors including the quality and affordability of nightlife, safety, community, excitement, diversity and hospitality.
Accra performed particularly well in affordability, community and friendliness. According to the survey, 62% of residents considered going out in the city affordable, while 75% said it was easy to find a sense of community. Another 65% described Accra as welcoming and friendly.
Time Out highlighted Osu as one of the capital’s established entertainment centres, while East Legon was identified as an increasingly important nightlife destination.
Accra’s after-dark scene also extends beyond mainstream Afrobeats, with electronic music, alté, R&B and other emerging music cultures contributing to the city’s distinctive nightlife identity.
To ensure wider global representation, only the highest-ranked city from each country was included in the list.
Johannesburg leads Africa
Johannesburg emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked city, placing seventh globally.
The South African city was praised for continually reinventing its nightlife, ranging from its historic warehouse-party culture to modern venues featuring house, techno, Afro-house, gqom, drum and bass and experimental music.
Johannesburg also recorded strong ratings for affordability and community, with 66% of locals rating its nightlife positively for affordability and 80% saying it was easy to find connection and community.
Clubs, casual pubs and cocktail bars were identified as some of the city’s strongest nightlife offerings.
Accra and Johannesburg were the only African cities to make the global top 20.
The overall ranking was led by Bangkok, followed by Berlin and Melbourne.
Accra’s 18th-place ranking further strengthens the Ghanaian capital’s reputation as a major destination for music, culture, entertainment and vibrant nightlife on the global stage.
