Accra-Kumasi Expressway to Feature 8 Interchanges, 55 Bridges and 11 Overpasses

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway will feature eight grade-separated interchanges, 11 vehicle overpasses and 55 mainline bridges as part of a major infrastructure package designed to improve safety and efficiency along the corridor.

The Managing Director of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited disclosed the details during Monday’s handover of a 175.6-kilometre right-of-way cleared by the Ghana Armed Forces.

198.7km expressway project

The project will cover approximately 198.7 kilometres, stretching from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region.

It comprises about 176 kilometres of newly constructed expressway and approximately 23 kilometres of upgraded connector roads at both ends of the route.

The mainline will be constructed as a Class A highway, featuring a three-lane dual carriageway on a 36-metre roadbed and designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour.

The connector roads will be classified as Class B roads, with a maximum speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.

Intelligent transport and safety systems

In addition to the major interchanges and bridges, the project will include nine at-grade intersections and approximately 200 reinforced concrete box culverts.

The expressway will also have four service areas for motorists, eight tolling points, one operating centre and two monitoring centres to facilitate traffic management and incident response.

Other planned facilities include a fire service and ambulance station, three maintenance depots, as well as road safety and electromechanical systems to support an intelligent transport network.

Expected impact

According to the Managing Director, the completed expressway is expected to shorten the current Accra-Kumasi travel distance by about 50 kilometres.

The project is also projected to cut journey times by half and reduce transportation costs by approximately 40 per cent.

“When completed, this road will provide safer and more reliable transport and reduce the pressure on the N6,” he added.
