A-Plus Calls on IGP to Probe New Winneba Violence, Says Landguard Activities Fuelled Tension
Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, to personally intervene in the violent disturbances at New Winneba that left at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The MP said he was deeply concerned about the incident and urged the Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, A-Plus said he was unhappy about the development but maintained that the matter should be handled through lawful processes.
“I am very angry. I am not happy with what has happened. We are going to allow the police to handle this matter, but the law allows us to defend our property. The police must protect the people,” he said.
According to the MP, tensions in the area had been fuelled by the activities of a group of individuals he accused of taking over lands and operating as landguards.
“There are a few people who have made themselves landguards and are causing havoc. Everyone knows their boundary,” he alleged.
A-Plus said he had previously taken steps to resolve the land dispute before the situation escalated.
He disclosed that he petitioned the Lands Commission over the disputed lands and received a detailed report concerning lands belonging to the Effutu and Gomoa people.
He further said he had petitioned the Interior Minister, who subsequently directed the Police to intervene in the matter.
The MP also raised concerns about the Police response during Tuesday’s disturbances, alleging that some residents who were demonstrating were unarmed while Police personnel fired shots.
“Today, the people said they were demonstrating, they were gunless; the police were rather firing guns,” he alleged.
A-Plus has consequently appealed to the IGP to visit New Winneba and personally investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence.
He also alleged that some Police officers could be benefiting from the activities of persons involved in the land disputes and called for those claims to be investigated.
“Some of the police are benefiting from them. We will not allow it to go on. Those people who perpetrated this are walking freely,” he alleged.
The Gomoa Central MP rejected suggestions that the incident represented a broader conflict between the Effutu and Gomoa communities.
According to him, the dispute centres on individuals he accused of unlawfully taking over lands in New Winneba, which he said originally belonged to the people of Gomoa.
A-Plus called for the law to take its course and demanded adequate protection for residents.
“We want the IGP to come here. We want the law to take its course. If not, we will call every chief and declare government an enemy of Gomoa,” he warned.
He, however, appealed to residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
“I will speak to my people to remain calm. However, if the state doesn’t protect us, we will protect ourselves,” he added.
Police Account
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that it has brought the violence under control.
According to the Police, the disturbances occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when an estimated 300-member mob reportedly stormed New Winneba Township.
The group, allegedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, was reportedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.
The Police said the group attacked residents and vandalised shops and properties belonging to natives of the area.
At least three people were killed, while about 15 others, including a police officer, sustained injuries and were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Security personnel have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation, while investigations into the incident continue.
