11 Arrested for Using Deepfake AI Videos to Impersonate President Mahama

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 11 suspects for allegedly creating and circulating AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating President John Dramani Mahama to scam unsuspecting members of the public online.
The suspects were arrested during coordinated operations by the Police Cyber Vetting Enforcement Team in parts of the Volta Region, including Sogakope, Dabala, Tongu, Akatsi, and Aflao between May 1 and May 4, 2026.
Police investigations revealed that the group allegedly used fake AI-generated videos and online impersonation schemes to solicit money and sensitive personal information from victims through digital platforms.
According to police, the suspects are believed to be part of a larger cybercrime network involved in creating fraudulent digital content using high-profile personalities for financial gain.
Items retrieved during the operation included laptops, mobile phones, internet routers, 120 pre-registered SIM cards, and a Nigerian-registered Mercedes Benz ML 350.
Nine suspects have been remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before court on May 25, 2026, while two others were granted bail with justified sureties.
The Police Service has cautioned the public to remain vigilant against online scams and verify information before responding to requests for money or personal details online.
