Write for Rights 2025: Join Amnesty International’s Global Movement to End Human Rights Abuses
Amnesty International Launches 2025 “Write for Rights” Campaign to Support Persecuted Individuals Worldwide
Amnesty International is calling on people across the UK to join its flagship letter-writing campaign, “Write for Rights,” aimed at supporting individuals globally who have faced persecution, imprisonment, or human rights abuses for standing up for justice.
A Global Effort for Human Rights
The 2025 “Write for Rights” campaign focuses on individuals suffering human rights abuses in various nations. This initiative follows the successful release of five government critics in Angola, who endured over a year of arbitrary imprisonment and severe neglect of healthcare needs, including urgent surgeries and life-saving HIV medication.
Sarah Jackson, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, urged the Angolan government to respect citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. She called for an end to arbitrary detention and torture in the country.
Highlighting Angola’s Human Rights Struggles
One of the detainees, Neth Nahara, featured prominently in Amnesty International’s 2024 campaign. Over 21,000 UK supporters wrote letters demanding her release. During her imprisonment, Neth was denied her daily HIV medication for eight months, resulting in significant health deterioration.
The other four activists were arrested in Luanda on September 16, 2023, before a planned protest in support of motorcycle taxi drivers. Angola’s President, Joao Lourenço, granted pardons to all five detainees on December 25, 2024, following international pressure.
Focus of the 2025 Campaign
Amnesty International’s 2025 campaign will spotlight several individuals enduring human rights violations, including:
Oqba Hashad (Egypt): A business student arbitrarily detained for nearly five years.
Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı (Turkey): The head of the Turkish Medical Association, facing over seven years in prison for her human rights advocacy.
Rita Karasartova (Kyrgyzstan): A human rights defender arrested in 2022 for opposing a border agreement that ceded a freshwater reservoir to Uzbekistan.
Proven Impact of “Write for Rights”
Amnesty International’s campaigns have secured freedom for many individuals worldwide, proving the power of collective advocacy. By participating in the 2025 “Write for Rights” campaign, supporters can help bring justice and freedom to those who need it most.
Join the campaign and take a stand for human rights today. Together, we can make a difference.
