World’s First Openly Gay Archbishop Reflects on Church Departures and Call for Unity

The Most Reverend Cherry Vann, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Monmouth, has spoken about the challenges facing the Church in Wales amid concerns over members leaving the church, following her historic appointment earlier this year.

Archbishop Vann, who became the first female Archbishop in the UK and the first openly gay Archbishop in the world in July, made the remarks ahead of delivering her first Christmas message. She acknowledged that debates surrounding sexuality within the church have been painful but stressed the importance of allowing space for differing views.

She said the Church in Wales is making efforts to be more welcoming to LGBT+ people, while recognising that some members find these changes difficult to accept. According to her, a number of people have chosen to leave the church as a result, a situation she described as deeply concerning.

“Some, sadly, have felt the need to leave, and I take that very seriously,” she said.

Archbishop Vann admitted that criticism related to her sexuality has been hurtful, noting that some comments feel like personal attacks. However, she maintained that individuals who hold opposing views should not be silenced.

“It can be very hurtful. It’s hard to hear some of the things that people say, but I think it’s important that there is space for them to say that,” she stated.

She emphasised her belief in fostering open dialogue within the church, even when opinions differ sharply.

“I don’t want people to feel shut down or silenced just because I hold a different view,” she added, while acknowledging the emotional toll such criticism can take.

Archbishop Vann concluded by calling for mutual respect and unity within the church, urging members to focus on their shared faith despite disagreements.

“We have to find a way as a Church to respect one another’s views and find a commonality in our faith in Christ, despite our differences,” she said.
