WASSCE at KNUST SHS Marked by Tragedy as One Candidate Dies

Authorities at KNUST Senior High School have confirmed the death of one of their candidates during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

 

According to the school’s management, the student passed away after a brief illness while the nationwide examination was in progress.

 

School mourns candidate

 

Management said the school community is mourning with the bereaved family while also providing emotional and academic support for the remaining candidates sitting for the exams.

 

The school further disclosed that another registered candidate has discontinued schooling and is currently absent from the examination.

 

Pregnant candidate participates in exams

 

Despite the challenges, the school confirmed that a pregnant candidate successfully took part in the English Oral examination alongside her colleagues.

 

A total of 1,022 candidates from the school are participating in this year’s WASSCE as core subject papers begin across the country.

 

Exams proceeding smoothly

 

The Assistant Headmaster (Academic) and Assistant Examination Supervisor, Agyekum Kwaku, described the examination process so far as calm and orderly.

 

He noted that the school maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice and said invigilators and supervisors are ensuring full compliance with examination regulations.

 

Calm reported at other centres

 

Other examination centres in Kumasi, including St Louis Senior High School and T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, also reported smooth and peaceful conduct of the exams.

 

More than 500,000 candidates across Ghana are currently taking part in the 2026 WASSCE organised by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
