Walewale Youth Lock Up Coordinating Director’s Office Amid Protest

The office of the Walewale Municipal Coordinating Director was locked up on Tuesday after a group of agitated youth stormed the Municipal Assembly premises in protest.

The incident forced the Coordinating Director, Justice Bayon, to flee the premises for safety before the protesters arrived.

Early morning unrest

Dozens of youth reportedly converged on the Assembly premises in the early hours of the day, chanting slogans and demanding immediate action over what they described as longstanding grievances.

The situation escalated quickly, creating panic among staff and disrupting normal administrative activities.

Sources within the Assembly said the Coordinating Director, having received intelligence about a possible protest, had already left the office before the group arrived.

Office locked, operations disrupted

On arrival, the youth allegedly forced entry into parts of the Assembly block and locked up the Director’s office, effectively halting official duties.

The protesters accused the Municipal Coordinating Director of absenteeism and poor performance in office.

“We no longer need him. We are appealing to the government to replace him,” one protester said.

Broader grievances

The protest was also linked to wider concerns, including unemployment, poor road conditions, and delays in development projects within the municipality.

Some residents complained that local infrastructure had deteriorated, with roads becoming impassable after rainfall and development equipment reportedly left idle.

Authorities respond

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah, said he would need clearance from the Regional Minister before commenting on the incident.

No injuries were reported, but the event left municipal staff shaken as tensions remain high in the area.
