Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Supports Ankaful Prison, Psychiatric Hospital

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed her commitment to promoting human dignity and strengthening social responsibility after extending support to the Ankaful Prison and the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast.

In a Facebook post, the Vice President explained that the gesture forms part of a longstanding annual tradition of giving back to society, aimed at supporting vulnerable groups and appreciating the dedication of frontline workers. The items were presented on her behalf by a delegation led by Presidential Staffer Kakra Yalley.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the donation to Ankaful Prison reflects the belief that every citizen, regardless of their circumstances, deserves humane and dignified treatment. She described correctional facilities as centres for rehabilitation rather than punishment alone, stressing that meeting the basic needs of inmates is essential for discipline, reform, and successful reintegration into society.

She commended the leadership and officers of the Ghana Prisons Service at Ankaful for their professionalism and dedication, despite operating under challenging conditions, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen the country’s correctional system.

A similar donation was also made to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to improve the welfare of patients and support staff. According to the Vice President, the gesture underscores a continued commitment to institutions that care for some of the nation’s most vulnerable people.

She praised the management and staff of the psychiatric facility for their service and assured them of government’s ongoing support to enhance mental health care delivery in the country.
