Prince Amponsah Signs with New York City FC Ahead of 2025 MLS Season

New York City FC has added a promising talent to their roster, signing US-born Ghanaian defender Prince Amponsah ahead of the 2025 Major League Soccer campaign. The 21-year-old inked a deal through 2025, with club options extending to 2028.

Amponsah returns to his roots, joining the MLS side from Wake Forest University, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Remarkably, he began his football journey with New York City FC’s academy, making him the club’s 16th homegrown player.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to sign with New York City FC; it’s a surreal moment for me,” said Amponsah. “This is something I’ve been working toward my entire life, and to achieve it with my boyhood club makes it even more special. Growing up in the shadows of Yankee Stadium, I’ve always dreamed of representing not just myself and my family, but my city.”

During his time at Wake Forest, Amponsah stood out as team captain, earning the 2024 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player title and United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-South Region honors.

“Wearing these colors and this badge means everything to me,” he added. “I can’t wait to play in front of New York City’s incredible fans and work toward lifting a trophy together. The journey here has been challenging, but it’s the grind every single day that makes this moment so rewarding. This is just the beginning, and I’m ready to keep pushing forward.”

New York City FC fans will be eager to see the local talent in action as Amponsah steps into the professional spotlight, aiming to make a significant impact in the upcoming MLS season.
