University of Ghana Regains Control of Legon Botanical Gardens

Accra, Ghana – The University of Ghana has successfully resolved its longstanding contractual dispute with Mulch Company Limited, formerly Pine Springs Company Limited, regarding the management of the Legon Botanical Gardens.

The university announced that Mulch Company Limited agreed to cease operations and vacate the gardens by November 30, 2024, following a legal process that affirmed the University’s position.

Background of Contract Dispute

In 2009, the University of Ghana entered into an agreement with Pine Springs Company Limited for the renovation and management of the Legon Botanical Gardens. However, over the years, Mulch Company Limited failed to fulfill its contractual obligations to the University.

Mulch Company Limited’s Announcement

Last Friday, October 11, 2024, Mulch Company Limited announced on social media that the Legon Botanical Gardens would close on October 30, 2024. The sudden announcement left many in the community concerned about the future of the gardens.

University’s Statement on Resolution

Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana, issued a statement explaining the resolution of the contractual dispute. The university assured the public that the Legon Botanical Gardens will continue to operate as a green space for the community.
