Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Attempting to Bribe Police Officer After Narcotics Seizure
The Greater Accra Police Command has arrested two men who allegedly attempted to bribe a police officer with GH¢30,000 following the seizure of a truck loaded with substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The suspects, identified as Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, a mechanic who resides in Kpando in the Volta Region, reportedly appeared at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters after a truck they claimed belonged to them was intercepted.
According to the Greater Accra Regional Police Relations Officer, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the incident occurred on Friday, September 11, 2026, when officers of the Bravo SWAT Unit, acting on intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu, near Achimota.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kpandai and was suspected of transporting and distributing narcotic substances in Accra.
Police said the occupants abandoned the truck and fled after allegedly spotting the officers.
A search of the vehicle subsequently led to the recovery of 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The substances were allegedly concealed in three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.
The truck and the recovered items were taken to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
During the investigation, Bangel and Arafat reportedly showed up at the police headquarters and claimed ownership of both the vehicle and the recovered substances.
Police alleged that the two subsequently attempted to influence the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander by offering him GH¢30,000 to secure the release of the truck and the suspected narcotics.
The two were arrested and the alleged bribe money was retrieved by the police.
Supt. Obeng said investigations had also established that the suspects mentioned a third individual, identified only as Salam, who allegedly drove the truck and the suspected narcotic substances from Kpandai to Accra.
The police said efforts were underway to locate and arrest Salam.
The two suspects are assisting with investigations, while the truck and suspected narcotic substances remain in police custody as exhibits.
The allegations against the suspects have not yet been tested before a court.
