TTAG Demands Suspension of Teacher Recruitment, Threatens Nationwide Protest

The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has called on the government to immediately suspend the ongoing teacher recruitment exercise, citing what it describes as unfair and distressing conditions for trained teachers across the country.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the association outlined five key demands it wants urgently addressed, warning that failure to act could lead to nationwide demonstrations.
Concerns Over Limited Vacancies
TTAG raised concerns about the limited number of available positions—approximately 7,000—which it says is inadequate given the growing number of trained teachers awaiting employment.
According to the association, the situation has become more troubling as three different cohorts of graduates are now competing for the same slots, worsening the plight of many who have remained unemployed for years.
“This situation has deepened the woes of teachers who have been at home for years,” TTAG stated.
Fear of Unfair Recruitment Process
The association described the current recruitment arrangement as a “troubling precedent,” warning that it risks sidelining many qualified graduates.
TTAG is therefore demanding a more transparent and equitable recruitment system that reflects the increasing number of trained teachers entering the profession annually.
Threat of Nationwide Demonstrations
TTAG cautioned that it will not hesitate to mobilise its members across the country if government fails to suspend the process after the expiration of its ultimatum.
The group is also urging authorities to engage relevant stakeholders to design a fairer distribution mechanism for teacher employment.
