Tragic Collision Between Train and Bus in Central Kenya Claims at Least Four Lives

A devastating accident occurred on Thursday when a train collided with a bus at a railway crossing in central Kenya, killing at least four people and injuring several others. The incident took place near the town of Naivasha, approximately 90 km northwest of Nairobi, plunging the region into mourning.

The bus, operated by the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), was transporting staff who had just completed their morning shift at a training center near the Morendat Training and Conference Centre. In a statement, KPC confirmed the accident, stating, “All injured staff have been evacuated to hospitals within Naivasha for medical attention.” The company also announced plans to organize airlifts for those critically injured, signaling the severity of the situation.

A Red Cross worker at the scene reported to Reuters that emergency teams had recovered four bodies from the wreckage, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear. KPC did not provide specific figures on the dead or injured. However, The Standard newspaper cited a police commander who claimed at least six people were killed and scores more injured, highlighting potential discrepancies in the reported toll.

The crash has raised concerns about safety at railway crossings, with rescue efforts ongoing as police and emergency responders manage the scene. The Kenya Red Cross and local authorities are providing support, including psychosocial assistance to affected families. Investigations into the cause of the collision are underway, with authorities yet to determine the full circumstances leading to this tragic event.
