Thousands Mourn Daddy Lumba at Emotional Kumasi Funeral

Thousands of fans, family members, and dignitaries gathered at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 13, 2025, to bid a final farewell to highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba, in a ceremony blending profound grief with celebratory tributes.
The stadium brimmed with mourners from dawn, adorned in traditional funeral attire and accessories bearing Lumba’s image. Vendors sold commemorative T-shirts, caps, and programs along entrance routes, while his timeless hits echoed through the grounds, prompting sing-alongs that mixed tears with nostalgia.
A solemn carriage bearing the casket arrived amid heartfelt applause, with Lumba’s wife, Odo Broni, visibly emotional alongside family. Veteran musician Nana Acheampong performed the first song he co-composed with the legend, moving many to tears.
Prominent attendees included NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene, family head Kofi Owusu, and businessmen Osei Kwame Despite and Akwasi Sarpong.
The atmosphere reflected Lumba’s generational impact, with elderly fans reminiscing and youth swaying to classics that soundtracked Ghanaian life.
The rites proceeded after an Accra High Court lifted a brief injunction stemming from family disputes over arrangements, allowing the long-planned ceremony to honor the musician whose career defined highlife for decades.
Mourners shared stories of Lumba’s influence on love, heartbreak, and celebrations, creating a poignant tapestry of gratitude for his enduring legacy.
