Tension Rises in Manso Akwasiso as Residents Accuse Soldiers of Causing Miner’s Death

Tensions are high in the Manso Akwasiso community following the death of a 20-year-old illegal miner, known locally as Evans, who reportedly fell into a galamsey pit while fleeing from military personnel.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and has sparked outrage among residents, who accuse soldiers of chasing the young man to his death.

According to eyewitness accounts, military officers arrived at the site in three pickups as part of operations to combat illegal mining activities. Upon sighting the soldiers, the miners reportedly fled in different directions. Evans, in his attempt to escape, fell into a deep galamsey pit and died.

Other miners attempted to rescue him, but witnesses claim the soldiers fired warning shots to prevent them from approaching the pit.

The Assembly Member for the area, Nsiah Kesse, confirmed the incident to Adom News reporter Kwadwo Obeng Mireku, describing the soldiers’ actions as unacceptable.

“The military officers arrived in three pickups. The miners, upon seeing them, fled, but one of them ended up in the pit, resulting in his death,” he said.

Nsiah Kesse added that the situation has created major tension in the community and called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the conduct of the soldiers.

No official statement has been issued by the Ghana Armed Forces or the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at the time of this report. The Ashanti Regional Police Command has not yet confirmed whether an investigation has been launched.

The death has reignited debate over the methods used in anti-galamsey operations, particularly in communities where illegal mining is deeply entrenched and provides livelihoods for many residents.

Local leaders and residents are demanding transparency, accountability and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Further developments are awaited as the community awaits official clarification and action.
