Tema Court Jails Two Police Officers 13 Years for Narcotics Trafficking

Tema Circuit Court has sentenced two police officers to a total of 13 years in prison for illegal drug possession and trafficking.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Nasiru Amadu, 48, and Corporal Emmanuel Mintah, 43, were found guilty after a four-year trial. The judge was Her Lordship Aleanor Kakra Barnes Botchway.

Case Details

In 2023, a fellow officer at Afienya District Police reported the two. Amadu was second-in-command at Sakumono District Police Headquarters. Mintah was his driver.

On November 19, 2023, during a snap-check, police got a tip that a Nissan Navara (GP 727) was carrying drugs from Ho to Accra.

At 7:15 p.m., the officers were stopped. A search found eight sacks with 541 parcels of suspected narcotics.

Mintah’s relative, Oluman from Ashaiman Tulaku, hired him to move the drugs from Peki Tsibu in Volta Region. Amadu joined the deal.

They picked up the drugs in a forest and were caught on the way back. It was their second time.

Tests at the Forensic Crime Laboratory confirmed the drugs.

Verdict

The court said they broke Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, and Section 37(2)(b) of the Narcotic Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).

Amadu got 10 years. Mintah got 5 years. Sentences run at the same time.

They were also fined 10,000 penalty units each (GH₵120,000). If not paid, they serve 3 more years each.
